In late August, Canucks head coach Rick Tocchet and his coaching staff will gather in Vancouver for a three-day summit.

Tocchet refers to the three-day coaching staff symposium, which he held last summer up in Whistler, as a “power conference.” It’s designed to be fast, efficient and stimulating, to build a sense of camaraderie and shared vision among his staff and to trial balloon some big ideas that might help propel this team forward.

The conference will bring together the wealth of hockey experience the Canucks have accumulated — there are over 7,000 NHL games played between Tocchet, assistant coach Adam Foote, development coaches Henrik and Daniel Sedin, assistant coach Sergei Gonchar, assistant coach Jaroslav “Yogi” Švejkovský, goalie coach Ian Clark and American League head coach Manny Malhotra — to hammer film and engage in high-level discussion, debates and arguments to prepare for this upcoming season.

It’s not all work and no play, though. There will also be a round of golf to keep things light and make sure everyone stays focused and on task; to prevent brains from frying during the lengthy, detailed meeting sessions.

Over several conversations with Canucks coaches in the past week, we’ve gathered some details about what Tocchet’s August “power conference” will entail. Here’s how the reigning Jack Adams winner and his staff will prepare to follow up and improve on a surprising and wildly successful 2023-24 campaign.
