Dean Chynoweth is entering his third season as the Assistant Coach of the Carolina Hurricanes. Prior to joining the Hurricanes, Chynoweth spent one season with the Vancouver Giants of the Western Hockey League (WHL) as the team’s Associate Coach. He began his coaching career in 1998 with the Utah Grizzlies of the International Hockey League (IHL) as both the Assistant General Manager and Assistant Coach. Chynoweth has spent that last 20 plus years coaching in the IHL (Utah Grizzlies), WHL (Seattle Thunderbirds, Swift Current Broncos, and Vancouver Giants), AHL (Lake Erie Monsters and San Antonio Rampage) and the NHL (New York Islanders).
Chynoweth was drafted in the first round (13th overall) by the New York Islanders in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft. He played in 241 career NHL games, suiting up for both the New York Islanders and the Boston Bruins. During his junior career, he won two WHL championships and two CHL Memorial Cup Championships in 1987 and 1988 with the Medicine Hat Tigers and the AHL Calder Cup in 1990 with the Springfield Indians.
