The NHL has assured its coaches that when hockey returns this summer, there will be no restrictions prohibiting them from doing their jobs, nor will any coaches of a certain age or another at-risk demographic be prevented from being behind the bench, deputy commissioner Bill Daly told ESPN on Thursday.

NHL coaches can’t really coach right now, since hockey isn’t being played. So they’re spending their newfound time coaching one another. The NHL Coaches’ Association expedited the launch of its mentorship program by six months to accommodate the thousands of coaches stuck inside and looking for enrichment.
“Todd Woodcroft is just a really nice man,” Maurice told me. “He’s the guy that makes sure people who do nice things get a thank you card. He’s the guy in our group that takes care of all of those things.”

The 2020 NHLCA Global Coaches’ Clinic in Montreal is officially cancelled due to COVID-19. We will be holding an online clinic in June — details will be available in the coming weeks.
As part of our chat with Hockey Hall of Fame legend Scotty Bowman, we also discussed his take on Pittsburgh Penguins current bench boss Mike Sullivan. Bowman said in a recent chat that Sullivan was perhaps the closest coach to himself. Sullivan is working for his third Stanley Cup ring while Bowman has nine as a head coach and five more in management roles.
Last June during draft week in Vancouver, I was invited by the NHL Coaches’ Association at their annual Coaches Clinic conference to moderate a panel featuring Scotty Bowman, Darryl Sutter and Terry Crisp.
