SEATTLE, Wa. — John Tortorella will become the eighth coach in NHL history to reach 1,500 games – and the first born in the United States – when the Philadelphia Flyers face off against the Kraken on Friday night at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle.
Further, the Flyers’ 4-1 victory in Vancouver on Thursday was his 723rd win as a coach, moving him into sole possession of 10th place on the all-time list — something that the players recognized after the game in the visitors’ dressing room in a video posted to its social media channels.
The 65-year-old Boston native is in his 22nd season as an NHL head coach and second with the Flyers. His previous stops include the New York Rangers, Tampa Bay Lightning, Vancouver Canucks and Columbus Blue Jackets. He has a record of 723-590-149 with 32 ties and has guided his teams to the playoffs on 12 separate occasions. Tortorella, a two-time winner of the Jack Adams award as the league’s top head coach (2004 Lightning, 2017 Blue Jackets), won a Stanley Cup with the Lightning in 2003-04.
