With the backdrop of the latest round of NHL Draft picks, BMO Private Wealth held a fascinating, and timely, in-person event with two of the NHL’s most respected coaches, André Tourigny and Dominique Ducharme.
Coaching in Montreal comes with a bright spotlight that Ducharme is still getting used to, but he can certainly empathize with Carey Price.
As I step through the doorway of the press conference room at the Bell Sports Complex, I’m greeted by the building manager, who’s fidgeting with a video camera and arranging wires to ensure the next virtual media availability scheduled for the Montreal Canadiens goes off without a hitch.
Prior to Game 4 at the Bell Centre, the Canadiens acknowledged three legends — Yvan Cournoyer, Guy Lafleur and Patrick Roy — sitting in a suite at the top of the arena.
“He had as good hockey sense as anybody I’ve coached,” says Mike Gilligan, who also coached Martin St. Louis at the University of Vermont.
When Barry Trotz’s Washington Capitals knocked out Jon Cooper’s Tampa Bay Lightning on the way to the Stanley Cup in 2018, the two coaches talked that summer about how it all went down.
Dominique Ducharme explains how the synergy has grown among the Canadiens’ coaching staff as the season has gone along.
“What we went through made our group stronger and now we can keep moving forward,” head coach says ahead of North Division final vs. Jets.
It’s been a gradual process, but the Canadiens are starting to round into form, and their coach is a big reason why.
“I need to challenge myself to try to take some time and disconnect a little bit,” Habs interim head coach says.
