NHLCA Feature Drill

At the start of the 2021-22 NHL season, we launched a new monthly campaign to share a drill from one of our NHL coaching staffs. For the 2024-25 NHL Season, we are excited to update the campaign to feature two drills each month on the 1st and 15th.

This campaign is part of the NHLCA’s objective of supporting the development of the next generation of NHL coaches.

2024-25 NHL Season - December 15

This drill improves a defensemen’s breakout passes while preparing them to defend against a 2-on-1. It sharpens gap control for the defensemen as they face attacking forwards, while all players practice decision-making under pressure.

Drill Name: D Pop Out

Drill Category:NZ Counter / Transition Drills

Description:

  • D pop out 2 vs 1.
  • D goes hard back for spotted puck – pick puck and skate – forwards cross and built speed – attack Defence with speed 2 vs 1 – makes a play to the net.
  • D that passed puck follow up and now you are defending.
  • New D from neutral zone hard back to spotted puck, Skate – forward cross and build speed –  attack with speed 2 vs 1.

2024-25 NHL Season - December 1

This drill allows forwards to improve simulated corner retrieval in order to generate quick shots. Goaltenders are able to work on their rebound control and positioning on shots from close range.

  • F rims a puck in the corner and skate to F3 spot.
  • Net front retrieves and has two options.
  • Pass right away to F3 for quick shot.
  • Skate in the corner, cutback and pass to F3 for quick shot.

2024-25 NHL Season - November 15

This drill improves forwards’ hand-eye coordination on net front tip plays and reactionary saves for the goaltender. The defensemen then regroup back into the defensive zone to spring a odd-man situation for the forwards with a long outlet pass.

Drill Name: 2 High Tips – Quick Up

Drill Category: Small Area Games & Drills

Description:

  • F1 passes to D1,D1 passes to D2, F1 skates above top of the circle into slot for 2 tips shot by D2 (high tip). – F2 passes to D2, D2 passes to D1, F2 skates above top of the circle into slot for 2 tips shot by D1 (high tip).
  • On the whistle spot puck at far blue – both D spring back- one F sprints and is posted at near blue, other F sprints towards posted F for support.
  • D passes to posted F or swinging F back into for 2 vs 0.
  • D can follow up for pass from Coach with point shot and traffic.

2024-25 NHL Season - November 1

This drill mimics puck retrieval processes in the DZ into a breakout up the ice. Forwards work on quick puck movement and transition play.

Drill Name: D 2 Pass With Point Shot

Drill Category: Shooting Drills

Description:

  • D starts on dot tags up to top of circle. Forwards must enter inside neutral faceoff dots.
  • Coach spots 1st puck, D retrieves puck skates up strong side pass to F low center who skates then pass outside to F opening up as a winger and skates down ice for inside dot shot and waits off to side of net.
  • F hustle back down low as D must tag top of circle and pivot backward than forwards to retrieve 2nd puck skate up strong side and pass to F and skates down ice for inside dot shot.
  • After shot F go to corner pick up puck and pass to D following us at blue line – walks blue for shot to the first forward at net with 2nd forward rolling to net to collect any rebounds.

2024-25 NHL Season - October 15

This drill simulates real defensive zone breakouts against a forechecking unit. Players are able to improve their decision making under pressure on both sides of the puck.

Drill Name: Perpetual Breakout/Forecheck

Drill Category: FC Drills

Description:

  • 5 defenders start in “”5 card”” formation.
  • Coach dumps the puck in.
  • 5 attackers forecheck using a specified forechecking system.
  • 5 defenders play DZC until they are able to execute a breakout.
  • After the defenders break out of the zone, the attackers are done and peel off to the bench.
  • After breaking out, the defenders cross the center line, and dump the puck in for the 5 new defenders who have lined up in “”5 card”” formation.
  • The 5 who dumped it in become the new forecheckers.

2024-25 NHL Season - October 1

This warm-up drill sharpens breakout strategies and offensive transitions. Players progress from solo to multi-player rushes, enhancing timing, puck handling, and shooting skills.

Description:

  • D in opposite corners with pucks.
  • D curl around the dot, get to the net and breakout with F who goes down for a shot.
  • D follow up the play and get pass from the D in corner for a shot with F at net for tip.
  • Progress to 2 forwards on breakout
    • Chip
    • Bump to low C
    • 3 widen out – D joining rush with the forwards.

2024-25 NHL Season - September 15

This drill sharpens shooting accuracy and net-front presence. Defenders practice agility and point shots while forwards focus on timing and screens, enhancing offensive plays and scoring chances.

  • F with good timing, swings around and gets a pass from D, then goes down for a shot

This drill helps to improve agility and defensive skills. It allows defenders to practice quick transitions and positioning while allowing forwards to hone their attacking strategies. This drill is essential for building individual defensive and offensive capabilities in game-like scenarios.

  • D makes a read based on coach and makes a breakout pass

  • After 2-1, F goes to the corner, picks up the puck, and goes low to high to D who followed the play
  • D shoots with F at the net and defending D boxing out the net front

  • On BO, coach pins D and F comes down and digs puck out

 A great drill to improve defensive gap control & pivoting skills for defensemen while providing the forwards with practice in attacking maneuvers & 1-on-1 situations.

Drill Category:1 on 1’s / 2 on 1’s / 3 on 2 Drills

Description:

  • D starts in corner, wheels around net and passes to F that started at red and works to position as winger in defensive zone
  • F continues down ice and goes inside, out around pylon, to attack the same end they broke out of
  • D gaps up and defends the rush – Switch position of cones as the drill progresses to force D to adjust their gap

Note: After D passes, they execute a quick pivot of 360 degrees, always facing up ice

Description:

  • Drill starts as shown.
  • An offensive F starts with the puck near the red line and the rest line up on the blue line.
  • The defensive F’s will start skating on command and the defensive D will be on the far blue line.
  • On the whistle, F takes off with the puck and the D lateral gap on him forcing a dump.
  • Defensive group enters the zone and works to break out against the offensive group.
  • Drill is played out live and ends on a whistle.

2023-24 NHL Season - April 15

This shooting drill allows for a quick shot from the forwards with a second low-to-high shot from the defense.

Description:

  • D at diagonal bluelines, forwards at all four bluelines.
  • Diagonal sides go at the same time.
  • D1 belly out and get a pass from F1, pivot and quick up back to F1.
  • D1 gaps up and moves lateral across the red line then receives a pass from F2.
  • Pivot and quick up to F2 going in for a shot with D1 joining and then receiving a third puck for a low-to-high shot. – At halfway point of drill, D switch sides.

  •  Starts with coach dumping a 50/50 puck.
  • The team that gains possession plays keep away 4 vs 3 half ice.

  • For red to go on offence they must gain possession and skate/carry puck across the half ice line before passing it to 4th red player to activate them.

The first drill is a great forward wall recovery drill with a quick attack with a shot and the second drill focuses on getting the inside position for a tip.

Description:

DRILL 1

  • Coach rims – Low to High with X pulling it off the wall for a give and go with Coach for a shot.
  • Puck 2 is rimmed from 1/2 wall Coach behind the net.
  • X retrieves passes back to 1/2 wall Coach and gets to the slot backward facing the 1/2 wall Coach for a pass and shot.

DRILL 2

  • ​​​​Puck 1 – Coach passes to 1/2 wall X climbing and getting to the inside for a shot.
  • Puck 2 – Shot from Coach with a net-front tip.
  • Puck 3 – Net X releases and skates around the circle. Receives a pass and gives it back to Coach and transitions to the goal line and receives it and pops off the goal line and takes it to the net.

Description:

  • D in zone gap up to hash marks on whistle and retrieve puck spotted by the Coach.
  • F’s will work off wall back into zone for break out from D.
  • Defending D will gap up off wall and take on rush. Attack 5 vs 2 up ice.
    • Middle lane drive.
    • 4th INRUSH
    • RELAY PLAYS
  • Whistle – Defending D gap to hash marks to break out play going opposite direction with 3 new F’s and 2 new defending D.
  • Offensive players are out on whistle.

Drill Name: Bumper Game

Drill Category: Small Area Drills & Games

Description:

  • In half of the offensive zone, set up a 5 vs 2.
  • The 5 offensive players must maintain control of the puck vs 2 defenders.
  • When the defenders win the puck they pass it to their team on the other half. Then 5 vs 2 starts on that side.
  • Clean sheet in a specified time = 1 point.

Both sides run at same time.

  • X1 skates and makes pass to X2.
  • X1 follows pass, goes around dot facing back to the line and is now X2.
  • X2 receives pass and passes to X3 who goes in for the shot.
  • X2 follows pass, goes around dot facing back to previous dot and is now X3.

Description:

To start drill, 2v2 to the net front at the far end.

On first whistle:

  • F3 pass to D3.
  • D to D and a shot on net.
  • F1 & 2, pressure out. F3 & 4 go to the net.
  • D1 & 2 box out the forwards or front shot

On second whistle:

  • F3 & 4 retrieve a new puck and go 2v2 against D3 & 4.

  • Drill goes both ways – 2 vs 1.
  • F2 receives pass from D1.

Drill Name: Hitchcock 1 vs 2

Drill Category: 1 on 1’s/ 2 on 1’s/ 3 on 2 Drills

Description:

  • F1 leaves and swings wide to the opposite end’s blue line. F2 leaves their end with timing, D1 steps out and can pass to either side. D2 is waiting in neutral zone and takes 2 vs 1 down.
  • After D1 makes their pass, they follow up play and take a new 2 vs 1 back to their end.
  • NO BUMPBACK TO D – Forwards receive the puck and turn up ice, attack as quickly as possible.

Place other net on the dot. Coach will pass to F1 for three different shots. Alternate sides.

  1. Change angle above the dot.

  • Drill starts with 1 D and 1 F net-front
  • 2 Coaches or 2 players behind net, 4-6 feet width outside each post
  • The two Coaches remain stationary as they pass the puck back and forth
  • At their discretion, they will try to pass the puck to the F battling for position in the slot
  • D defends passes with focus on body positioning, facing the puck and good stick position

  • One forward on each side of the center circle touching the red line.
  • On the whistle, forwards go halfway around the center circle to pick up the puck on the red line for 1-on-1 vs D on the dot.

Part 2
1. D1 passes to F2 working across middle, who chips to F1 posted at blue line.

D: 1. Low-High pound. 2. Climb and slide

Description:

  • F1F2 gather speed around forward group, coach spots puck either side to speed forward and F1 must execute a pass with F2 one timing the puck or with a catch & release shot.
  • F1 needs to stop at the net for a rebound and develop a good habit of stopping at the net.

Drill Name: Mads 3 vs 3

Drill Category: Small Area Game

Description:

  • Set one net in the standard position in the crease and a second net between the circles, facing the blue line.
  • Play 3 vs 3 in the zone with a coach along each wall (always on offence).
  • Players must pass to one of the coaches on change of possession before attempting to score. Coaches can move laterally along the wall and must pass back to the team that passes to them.
  • Teams can score on either net.

July 2022

Set up just like the Great One behind the net. This teaches players how to escape the opposition and get open.

Drill Name: Gretzky – Behind the Goal Line – 10 Players

Drill Category: Small Area Game

Description:

  • Drill Set Up – Pucks in the slot at the top of the circles.
  • One player stays below the goal line the entire time.
  • After each change of possession the attacking team must make a pass to the player below the goal line.
  • The player below the goal line will change after every goal scored.
  • 5 players in 5 players out, players switch every minute.

Description:

  • Coach spots a puck behind the net. Red Fs play Black D 3v2
  • Black Fs and Red D stay above the tops of the circles.
  • Coach continues to spot pucks until whistle.
  • On whistle Black Fs take off against Red D 3v2 and Red Fs on Offence transition to Defence. Play it out 5v5 in OZ, 2nd coach can spot pucks in OZ as needed.

Description:

  • 5 pucks
  • F3 stays below the goal line and looks to feed F1 and F2 for a shot (2 vs 1 net front).
  • After the first puck or whistle from coach, F1 & 2 around dot cones, D around the middle cones.
  • F3 moves below goal line looking for the forwards with second puck. This continues for pucks 3/4/5.
  • *Progression – 2 vs 2 situations or the forwards around middle cone, D around the dot cone.

A great drill to start your practice which includes multiple one-touch passing. Emphasize moving your feet continuously and tape to tape passing.

Drill Name: NZ Speed

Drill Category: Warm Up Drills

Description:

Opposite sides go together.

  • X1 belly out, pass from X2 then X1 passes to O1 in the opposite line.
  • O1 indirect pass to X2 in starting line then X2 bump back to X1 in the center of the ice.
  • X1 gets puck back and passes across to O3.
  • O3 passes back to X1, who drives the middle with speed for a shot on goal.
  • Use tire to make shooter change the angle of shot.

March 2022

This drill teaches the technique of surfing, a lateral motion across the ice that mimics surfing, which allows the D to close the gap on the forward.

Drill Name: 1 vs 1 Push the Pace

Drill Category: 1 vs 1/ 2vs 2 Drills

Description:

  • Forwards in all 4 corners with pucks. D on walls at blue lines.

  • 1 vs 1 out of opposite corners. Forwards work on pushing the pace. Defence work on surfing up and taking the gap early.

  • D should allow forwards to handle the puck until puck gets into the OZ where they play out the 1 vs 1.

    Surfs Up: “Going forwards toward a player then transitioning backwards”

Defensive zone coverage is critical for the center to work with the defensemen. This drill allows the low battle, which turns into the all-important backcheck.

Description:

    • Drill starts as shown. Opposite lines go at the same time and will mirror one another.
    • X1 backskates and gets a pass from X3. X1 then pivots and passes to O1 and gets a pass back. X1 then passes to X4 and gets a pass back.
    • X1 then passes to O2 and opens up for a pass at the red line and gets the puck back. Goes down for a shot in the opposite end they started in.
    • After X1 and X2 cross the blue line, O1 and O2 step out and go.

October 2021

The Hurricanes share a competitive, two part warm-up drill that begins with a quick shot and finishes with a 2 vs 2 battle.

Description:

    • Forwards touch pass then shoot on goalie with defence following. Curl around cones and race up ice. Coach will lay a puck out for 2 vs 2 in the zone.
    • D and F’s curl around cones and race up ice. Coach will lay a puck out for 2 vs 2 in the zone.
    • Play it out. If the defence wins the puck, they have to skate it out of the zone.
